Willow showrunner Jonathan Kasdan hopes for more adventures with the wizard if the upcoming outing proves to be a success for Disney+. Speaking to Den of Geek, Kasdan revealed his plans for more stories involving Warwick Davis’ Willow Ufgood, though the first season is planned as a satisfying, lonely adventure should that be the case.
“We’re building a plan to continue the story, and hopefully it ends in a way that calls for more because we think this is a fun world, and the threats that we set up in season one aren’t resolved by the end of it. But I also hope that the season itself is satisfying because it also makes you excited to see what happens next.”
Willow will continue the story first told way back in 1988, continuing with Warwick Davis as the title character all these years later. This new journey, which runs for eight episodes, begins when an unlikely group of six heroes embark on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home in search of Kit’s twin brother, the daughter of Madmartigan (Val Kilmer’s character in the first film). Kasdan also reveals that the mission will involve finding the prophesied hero Elora Danan, the mysterious baby Willow is tasked with protecting in the first outing and helping her meet her destiny.
“That was my whole argument to everybody. And it’s reflected in the spin-off novels that came out in the late ’90s. But the question the movie asks is, ‘What happened to Elora Danan?'”
The response to the continuing adventures of Willow has been overwhelmingly positive so far, and should the first season prove to be a success with audiences; there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing more from the beloved character courtesy of Kasdan and Disney+.
Willow Premiering on Disney+ later this week
Willow sees Warwick Davis return to the role of Willow Ufgood, a Nelwyn wizard who must lead a rag party to rescue the twin brother of a princess. “The most emotional moment on set was Warwick’s first costume fitting when he came out of the dressing room in that robe for the first time and we saw him in full makeup… you couldn’t help but connect it to your childhood in a powerful and profound way,” Kasdan said about seeing Davis back in the role he last played over 30 years ago.
Mare of Easttown star Ruby Cruz stars as Kit, the princess in search of her brother. The rest of the cast includes Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Ellie Bamber (The Serpent, Les Misérables), Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Amar Chadha-Patel (The wheel of time), Dempsey Bryk (The silence) as Airk, the prince and Kit’s twin brother, and Joanne Whalley, reprising her role as Sorsha from the first Willow.
In addition, Kevin Pollak and Rick Overton will reprise their roles as brownie duo Rool and Franjean, with Ralph Ineson, Christian Slater and Warwick Davis’ daughter Annabelle Davis also joining the adventure.
Willow is scheduled to premiere on November 30, 2022 on Disney+.
