Directed by Ron Howard, the adventure film was released in 1988 and has gradually gained a cult following.

Its fandom has long held out hope for a sequel, and their prayers have finally been answered; not in the form of a movie sequel, but a TV series. A series of the same name was developed by Jonathan Kasdan and began premiering on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, taking place 20 years after the events of its predecessor.

“It’s very modern and very unusual”

Jonathan recently spoke to ScreenRant about appealing to both fans of the original film and new audiences:

“… as a fan of the movie, it’s not hard for me to lean into the parts of it that I love, wanting to continue the story and build out the world that George [Lucas] and Ron so beautifully designed and rendered. But at the same time, one of the charms of Willow is that it has it at its center, this performance by Val Kilmer that is very modern and very unusual…

“… I think we wanted to let that also be something that we continued on in spirit, which was to have modern voices,” he continued.

“Voices that you weren’t used to hearing in fantasy, be your guides through it, so that you get this very unusual and specific experience of going to a fabulous world, but being with people you could imagine were your friends .”
