Willow Cast: Meet the actors of the Disney+ series
Joanne Whalley is Sorsha
The show’s other returning main character is Queen Sorsha. One of fantasy’s most groundbreaking female characters, she is now a mother and leader trying to keep her children and the kingdom safe from the evil she once defeated. When we spoke to Ruby Cruz, she couldn’t contain her enthusiasm for the woman who paved the way for Kit. “Sorsha was such a character ahead of her time, she’s such a strong character. And I also think it’s a lot of fun, where the audience has to find Sorsha. Because there are a lot of different ways that character could have gone, and I think it’s super interesting where we meet here.” She was also eager to give credit to the woman who brought her to life. “Joanna is a real warrior. She’s so incredible.”
Ruby Cruz is Kit and Dempsey Bryk is Airk
The twins at the center of the adventure are Kit and Airk. It is the latter’s abduction that sets Kit on the path to adventure and Willow. Before that, however, they were raised in the safety of the castle by their mother Sorsha and absentee father Madmartigan. The royal twins gave the show a chance to reimagine these characters for a new era. Kasdan says, “With Ruby and Dempsey, it was about asking, ‘Are we going to continue the legacy of Madmartigan and Sorsha?’ But also ask: ‘What would it look like if it developed?’ Just as Mads was a creation of the late 80s, what would a 2022 version of a hip self-referential heroine and hero look like? A lot of these things were just intuitive moves much more than they were any calculated choices.”
Amar Chadha-Patel is Boorman
Another character who carries on Madmartigan’s legacy is the adventurer and criminal Boorman who is recruited into their party by Queen Sorsha. Kasdan explains that it was a chance to introduce a new iteration of the character “But instead of saying we’re going to do Mad Martigan again, we literally had him be kind of an apprentice to Mads. It’s true to all these movies now, the characters we get are kind of the offspring of the characters from the ’80s and ’90s, so we made it very literal in the show. Boorman learned all of Mads’ tricks from him. Still, Amar brings something that’s so clearly his own which is very funny and fresh.”
Erin Kelleyman is Jade
Along for the ride is Kit’s best friend and trainer, Jade. A brave knight who will do anything for Kit, she is played by the brilliant Erin Kelleyman. Although Kasdan was tight-lipped about Jade’s role, he had a lot to say about the actress who brings her to life. “She’s a unique and one-of-a-kind person, but she just fits into the landscape of this thing. First of all, she can do the action in a way that’s just incredible. She’s good with a sword and she’s probably a warrior. It was something we all took away Solo is that she can use this weapon. She also has such a sense of humor and dryness mixed with a truly aching heart that just felt brand new to Willow.”
Ellie Bamber is Dove
An unexpected addition to the journey is Dove. The quiet kitchen girl who is best known around the castle for her delicious baked goods joins the crew for a very special reason. It happens to be Dove Airk’s current beauty. Despite the prince being quite the lothario, Dove is committed to him and believes he feels the same way. And because she’s completely herself, when he disappears, Dove decides she has to help the man she loves. However, his sister may not be too happy about the new member of her questing party.
Tony Revolori is Graydon
The last member of the party is Graydon. The seemingly spoiled prince to whom Kit is betrothed is far from your average adventurer, but is drawn into the quest due to circumstances. He is a reluctant player, but has a dark secret that will come to light as the series continues. While Kit is far from enthusiastic about their marriage, Graydon takes a far more serious approach to his duties, feeling that the couple should do what they must to defend the kingdom. But that could change when they head out into the big world to find Willow and save the kingdom they love.
