If you’re a Reddit user, you’ve probably heard about the huge billboard in Allston, Massachusetts, offering a free Buick in exchange for a date with someone’s son. The ad, apparently written by two concerned parents, sparked controversy online, but it turned out to be just a marketing stunt for the upcoming Jennifer Lawrence movie No Hard Feelings.

The billboard can be seen from the Massachusetts Turnpike East near Boston and reads “Need a Car? “Date Our Boy,” with a picture of a 2004 Buick Regal advertised as “clean, rust free, 40k miles.” According to the description, the boy is “smart but very socially shy”, and the parents will give the Buick to someone who will “date him and bring him out before college”.

There is even an email for those interested. Those who searched for [email protected] received an automated response: “Hi! Thank you for your interest in dating our son. We have already received many responses, but the final decision will be made on Thursday, March 9. We will be in touch soon! Allison and Laird”.

While it’s hard to fall for such a hackneyed line, the fake ad is a bit misleading as it makes no mention of the film. The same goes for the “Date Our Son” Facebook page. Reddit users criticized the campaign for using a topic falsely associated with trafficking in women.

According to its dedicated IMDB page, “No Hard Feelings” is a comedy directed by Gene Stupnitsky and will premiere on June 23, 2023. The plot hinges on a female Uber driver who answers the aforementioned ad on Craigslist. He’s willing to meet the “introverted and socially awkward teenager” in exchange for the used Buick after his Toyota is impounded. Jenifer Lawrence plays the woman and Andrew Feldman plays the 19-year-old boy. You can watch the trailer below.
