The new dating craze is sniffing each other’s armpits

Oh yes baby! I hope the armpits come in, because this new speed dating trend is affecting a lot of people.

The internet has turned dating into an anti-social event that requires sitting behind a computer or smartphone screen. There have been many complaints about the days of Tinder and hookup culture, but new trends are beginning to rear their heads. Instead of returning to the Pre-internet dating daysthis new trend has taken it to the extreme by getting super up close and personal.

The new dating craze is sniffing each other’s armpits.

While online dating and apps like Tinder aren’t the worst things in the world for romance, they aren’t ideal. Unfortunately, attraction is based solely on appearances rather than the factors that truly influence how much we love someone.

While personality, lifestyle, and body language are all important factors in attraction, other things like body odor can also be huge predictors. Odors can be aphrodisiacs—specifically, body odors.

So, to explore this idea further, an event called Romancing The Armpit was held at a bar in London to test pheromone compatibility (essentially how much we like someone based on their natural body odors).

The participants of the event were given paper bags that they wore on their heads. They were also given a score sheet and each individual was assigned a matching number. Participants were instructed to blend in blindly, communicating only by talking and taking a good breath from each other’s armpits. For each person they smelled, they were instructed to mark an approval or a big NO on their scorecard.

Then the second round of sniffing began, the bags were taken off their heads. Participants had to sniff and again score based on smell/look. After the second round, the score sheets were collected and entered into a computer system. The system searched for matches based on ticks next to the same person’s name in both rounds.

With this system, the event staff was able to match four lucky couples. Then they got a festive sausage, like in The Lady and the Tramp. What a good story they will have to tell their future children.

While not everyone enjoyed the event or even found a match, it was a great way for people to talk and think about how they are attracted to others. Dating is very tainted, so thinking outside of finding love may be the best way to go. At least you can learn something about the prospect that you can’t get from an app or direct message.

Good hygiene should be high on the list of “qualities of a good mate.” If someone can’t take care of their body properly, it can say a lot about how they would take care of their partner. Instead of trying to find love from behind the screen, more people should get out there and start sniffing some pits.
