The benefits of streaming Disney+ Originals on linear TV – What’s happening on Disney Plus

With Disney+ being a roaring success and producing dozens of titles a year, I wanted to raise the question of what many have been thinking. Will Disney broadcast its older Disney+ Originals on linear TV? And with Disney’s recent actions in airing series like “Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” on Freeform, I wanted to discuss the merits of Disney airing its Disney+ Originals on traditional linear television.

Raise more awareness of these originals:

Let’s start with the first important point. It’s basically a free campaign for Disney+. If Disney decided to air season one of “The Santa Clauses” on the Disney Channel to hype up its second season, it would increase awareness among potential new fans of that series who may not already subscribe to Disney+.

More content for linear, which is still profitable:

Okay, this point is important, so let me explain. Despite what many media outlets have reported, cable TV is still very profitable. Revenue is down, yes, but the channels are still mostly profitable and need new content to continue generating revenue. Many on social media, especially Twitter, have called for Disney to shut down their channels, but I see the channels as a win-win platform for Disney+. Disney has already started airing shows like “Monsters At Work” and “The Mysterious Benedict Society” on Disney Channel, which not only provides more content to monetize on traditional TV, but also as free advertising for that series and Disney+.

Reduce losses from content spend:

This is a factor that not many people discuss, but let me explain. The cost of making entertainment will only increase as time goes on, so Disney needs to find a way to recoup their investment. To me, doing something like airing the first season of “Doogie Kamealoha MD” on the Disney Channel before season two not only gives Disney more promotion for the follow-up season, but also brings more revenue which makes the series more profitable and increases the chances that the series is renewed.

Final thoughts:

Many may think this is a bad idea, as Disney+ Originals should only be made available for Disney+, right? But Disney could effectively use the older series of Disney+ Originals such as “The Mandalorian” or “Loki” to increase viewership and advertising revenue from the channels Disney airs them on, but also make the series more profitable. Disney+, in my opinion, should air the previous seasons of their originals on Disney’s linear channels as a way to promote those series and Disney+ to a new audience that may not already subscribe.

What do you think? Should Disney+ air its older seasons of originals on linear TV?
