The 3 common apps that take up the most storage space on Apple devices – delete them immediately

If you’re having storage problems on your iPhone, the only real solution is to change your settings, accept the loss, and start deleting, deleting, deleting. But don’t worry: this doesn’t mean you have to get rid of your favorite apps or part with the precious photos and videos you’ve collected over the years. In some cases, all it takes is a few simple settings that can take up much more storage on your phone than necessary. And in other cases, yes – you can free up space by deleting the most storage-hungry apps so you can use your phone the way you want.
Tech expert Brandon King, founder of tech startup Home Security Heroes, says device storage usage depends on individual users. What takes up space for one user is not the same for another user. That said, there are three common apps that take up the most space on Apple devices. If you’re tired of running out of storage, start here.
Photos application
King points out that most people take a lot of photos and videos on their iPhone or iPad, all stored in the Photos app. “By default, the iPhone camera records video at 60 frames per second (fps) in full 1080p HD resolution,” he says. “This means that a video video of this resolution takes up 130 MB of space per minute. Lower the resolution and adjust the frame rate to significantly reduce the video file size.”
Meanwhile, for photos, the camera defaults to the “Live” setting, which takes up more space because Live Photo captures the events before and after the image is taken, including audio. “You can turn this off when taking pictures to save space,” says King.
Another important tip is to move your most important photos and videos to the Cloud to keep them safe while freeing up more storage space on your device.
Messaging apps
You guessed it: social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber or Telegram use a lot of storage space, King confirms. “Most of these apps download shared photos and videos by default,” he says. “To save space, turn off default downloads and always clear the data and storage usage of these apps.”
Video editing applications
Video editing applications such as Adobe Premiere Rush, iMovie or Capcut creating Tiktok or short videos takes up a lot of space, King says. Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use them, but it does mean you should save them somewhere other than your phone and not keep them forever. “When you’re done with your project, export your edited video and consider deleting the project file in these apps to save space,” says King.
You don’t have to throttle your phone’s features to save storage — but a few tweaks here and there can make a world of difference.
