Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is working on a new app. A text-based content application that will be compatible with ActivityPub. This decentralized social networking protocol powers various decentralized social media applications that compete with Twitter, including Mastodon.
Dubbed P92, the app will reportedly carry Instagram branding and offer users the option to log in with their existing Instagram credentials. This initiative aims to capitalize on the growing trend of Twitter users looking for alternative platforms.
TechCrunch reports that the P92 team intends to use the “fork” approach in the initial version of the app. This means that users’ profiles will be populated with their Instagram account information, such as their name, username, bio, profile photo, and followers. However, the app will also have an additional privacy policy and terms of service that specifically address data sharing between apps while adhering to the company’s existing privacy policy.
Recently, a number of competing platforms, such as Mastodon, Post.news, and T2, have launched or proliferated as tech companies and startups seek to capitalize on the growing inclination of Twitter users toward alternative decentralized social media platforms.
The primary goal of the minimum viable product (MVP) of the decentralized social media application P92 is to allow users to share their posts with people on other servers. However, it remains uncertain whether users will be able to follow or view content from other servers. Also, the initial version of the app offers various features. These include tappable links in posts with previews, user bios, usernames, verification badges, and shareable images and videos.
The app also provides followers and likes. However, it is not certain whether the first version will include comments and messaging options. In addition, the development team is considering allowing resharing of content similar to Twitter, but only for business and creator accounts. MVP will include a rights manager for internal content, but will not support third-party content from other servers and applications.
Sources indicate that the P92 app will prioritize privacy. It leverages blockchain technology to give users more control over their data. Meta has been exploring blockchain technology for some time and recently rebranded as Facebook. The move is meant to reflect its focus on the metaverse and other emerging technologies.
Meta’s entry into the realm of decentralized social media with the P92 app marks a major step in the tech giant’s efforts to capitalize on Twitter users’ growing inclination toward alternative platforms. The application’s prospects for success are uncertain. However, the company’s focus on privacy and adoption of blockchain technology could give it an edge over its rivals.
