Matthew Lawrence opens up about past romantic troubles after breaking up with Cheryl Burke


To reflect on his past. Matthew Lawrence discussed the important lessons she’s learned from her relationships — and seemingly offered insight into what caused her breakup Cheryl Burke.
“I realized that was why I was so off track when it came to relationships. I ended up dealing with people that I was trying to please and make happy,” Lawrence, 43, explained on the Friday, March 3, episode of the “Brotherly Love” podcast.
During a frank conversation with the brothers Joey Lawrence and Andrew LawrenceMatthew broke down the problems in his personal life.
“It really wasn’t like, ‘Was this a good union? Do we make each other happy? Is there trust and bonds and are there good things here? I just said, ‘If I do anything right, I’m going to make sure this person is so damn happy with me,'” she recalled. “It never works.”
THE Boy meets the world alum noted that he cannot “make someone else happy” on his own.
“Love is wonderful, but love doesn’t do it by itself,” he continued. “You can love someone to death and be in a toxic relationship that spirals out of control and destroys both of your lives. What works? Trust and respect.”
Matthew, whose divorce from Burke, 38, is set to be finalized in September 2022, recently opened up about their relationship after previously choosing to remain tight-lipped. The former couple dated for several years before tying the knot in 2019. After nearly three years of marriage, the actor and the dancer called it quits in January 2022.
At the time, it was the former Dancing with the stars pro addressed the obstacles she has faced since the breakup. “To be honest, I’m new to feeling my feelings,” she wrote on Instagram in March 2022, noting that she had felt emotionally “numb” most of her life. “There’s an obvious reason it’s hard: the emotions I’m experiencing right now are complicated and not exactly happy.”
She continued: “However, the less obvious reason is that I find that I tend to judge my own feelings, and when I’m with other people, it’s enhanced. I’m so focused on other people’s perception of how I’m handling my emotions – which in turn makes me question whether I’m feeling ‘right’ about things.”
Two months later, the California native discussed how she worked on herself before getting back into dating.
“I have to believe and love myself enough to really know I deserve a good guy,” she exclusively said Us Weekly in May 2022. “It just doesn’t train my brain. I don’t have to say, “Why am I attracted to certain men?” On the contrary, for example: “Why do certain men disgust me?” I proactively try to be present and aware and know my self-worth. And much of that is still a work in progress.”
For his part, Matthew made contact with TLC Chili made public earlier this year. After the couple posted a video together on New Year’s Eve, a source revealed U.S that they were excited about their future together.
“They didn’t mean for things to go so fast, it was a cool situation, but they clicked right away and wanted to be together as often as possible,” the insider shared in January. “They’re both very optimistic and excited, it’s an incredibly happy time for them.”
According to the Mrs. Doubtfire star, he is currently “trying” to expand his family with his 52-year-old girlfriend.
“That’s the game plan,” he said Fun tonight during an interview on Friday. “My life is in full bloom right now. I get to spend time with a wonderful woman like Chilli. I have never experienced such a connection. He is really, really special.”

Matthew also opened up about how the end of his marriage has affected his life, adding: “It tested me and I learned so much about myself and I’m so grateful and blessed for the opportunity to grow and that’s what came out of it.”
