Disney+ Basic subscribers consider canceling as new tier unavailable on Roku
This week, The Walt Disney Company launched Disney+ Basic, a new tier of its streaming services that is a few dollars cheaper but comes with ads in most of its content. The lure of a cheaper subscription is one that has enticed some viewers to change their plans, but some are finding out the hard way that their new Disney+ subscriptions can’t even be watched the way they want. TechCrunch was quick to note that this new ad-based tier is “not currently available on Roku devices,” meaning anyone with this subscription and a Roku is out of the loop.
As with almost everything in this sphere, the reason Disney+ Basic doesn’t show up on Roku seems to come down to one big thing, money. A representative for Disney revealed to the outlet that they are “in talks with Roku to reach an agreement that works for both parties,” one that TechCrunch guesswork is about sharing ad revenue. For what it’s worth, financial analyst Michael Nathanson previously predicted that an ad-based tier of Disney+ had the potential to generate nearly $2 billion in revenue by 2025, a piece of the pie that Roku would be missing if it were allowed to happen through its devices (which also sell ads on their own content). This not only affects people with the Disney+ Basic subscription, but anyone with a package that also has Disney+ Basic
The sudden surprise that Disney+ Basic is not available on Roku devices, which Disney+ acknowledges on its help center page, has not gone unnoticed. Many users who switched from the higher tier to a cheaper one were caught off guard, and several are threatening to cancel their subscriptions entirely. Is it true that you dropped support for Roku? In that case I have to cancel D+

Between this and all the recent changes to the parks, Disney seems intent on making it harder, more expensive, or (most often) both to be a Disney fan. Really disappointing to see the company continue to show how little it actually cares about consumers lately.

Found out the hard way
Guess I’ll cancel @disneyplus since they increased the prices and I tried to choose the version with ads. At the time of the switch it didn’t say anywhere that it didn’t work with Roku devices. Found out the hard way.
