Apple Music Classical: 15 things you need to know about the new app

Apple today introduced Apple Music Classical to the App Store. Here are 15 things you need to know about the new app:

• ‌Apple Music‌ Classical is based on the classical music streaming service Primephonic, which was acquired by Apple in 2021. The new app leverages Primephonic’s playlists and audio content, search capabilities, metadata and more.
• ‌Apple Music‌ Classical works alongside the existing ‌Apple Music‌ app, providing dedicated features for a more direct connection to classical music on the ‌Apple Music‌ platform, but with many features such as support for Spatial Audio.
• As the name suggests, the app features only classical music, with over five million tracks, hundreds of curated playlists, and thousands of exclusive albums.
• Apple says it has partnered with classical music artists and institutions to offer exclusive content and recordings on ‌Apple Music‌ Classical, including Hi-Res Lossless and Spatial Audio tracks.
• The design of the app is based on ‌Apple Music‌, but with a simplified user interface that heavily uses Apple’s New York font instead of SF Pro.
• ‌Apple Music‌ Classical does not have a Radio tab, and it is not yet clear whether it supports ‌Apple Music‌ classical radio stations.
• The app offers a better search experience, allowing users to search by composer, work, conductor, catalog number and more.
• The background of the Now Playing screen is completely white or completely black, unlike the ‌Apple Music‌ app, which creates a background from the album art of the currently playing track.
• On the Now Playing screen, instead of the lyrics, there is an info button that gives a detailed description of the songs.
• The app includes rich composer biographies, editorial notes and detailed information on key works.
• Apple commissioned unique artworks by famous artists for ‌Apple Music‌ Classical using the color palettes and artistic references of the respective classical era. The first portraits include Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach, with more to come.
• ‌Apple Music‌ Classical does not have an iPadOS version, so it is an iPhone-only app.
• According to Apple, an Android version of ‌Apple Music‌ Classical is in the works and will arrive soon.
• Apple has launched a new Twitter account for ‌Apple Music‌ Classical, @almaklasszikusto track news and updates about the app.
• ‌Apple Music‌ Classical is free as part of an existing Apple Music‌ or Apple One subscription, but not included with the $4.99 per month Apple Music Voice subscription.

‌Apple Music‌ Classical is now available for pre-order on the App Store and is scheduled for release on March 28, 2023.
