A creepy VR app lets you relive your memories

Reliving the moments of our lives may sound like the plot of Netflix’s Black Mirror, but new technology will soon allow people to step into a captured memory.

Wist is developing a smartphone app to capture unforgettable moments that are uploaded to a virtual reality headset, allowing users to interact with the experiences they once had.

The program captures the 3D information of the recording to turn each recording into an immersive world.

A beta version of the VR app called Vivid is available on iOS, but it pairs with a Quest VR headset and allows users to invite friends to join them in their memories.

The VR app echoes the plot of Black Mirror’s “The Entire History of You,” where people access memories through an implant that records everything they see.

Technology allows them to rewind, zoom in and sift through the scenes of everyday life.

However, Élénk shows the memories recorded on the smartphone.

Wist founder Andrew McHugh said this is thanks to sensors and software in modern smartphones with 3D capture technology.

“The right combination of new technology allows us to capture: spatial moments in time that you can step back into,” Hughs shared in a post on Medium.

“With the right planning and design, this can be as easy as recording a video. We can turn a dream into reality.

To relive a memory, users record the experience with the Vivid app, which collects the information needed to transform 2D footage into a 3D world, FreeThink writes.

“During capture, we save color, depth, device pose, audio, and scene information,” McHugh explained to Freethink.

“Depth is recorded using LiDAR sensors on Pro model iPhones and iPads.”

The app and program are still in their early stages and show videos that are buggy and missing parts of the scene.

However, Wist wants to improve the app before it is officially released.

The concept was also developed by a developer who recreated the experiences captured by Snapchat Spectacles.

Lucas Rizzotto wore the specs for a year, filmed his everyday life every day, and used the footage to create a VR “time machine” that allows him to relive 2019 all he wants.

Rizzotto used Snapchat Spectacles 3 glasses, which have two cameras built into their frames that can record video in stereoscopic 3D.

He made a video detailing the process of building the VR ‘time machine’.

Equipped with an Oculus Rift S t VR time machine, and wearing a Nintendo Power Glove just for visual effect, Rizzotto recorded his first jump in time into the past, which was shown to viewers on a giant screen.

“I’m in a tree eating a bagel,” Rizzotto said with a laugh, saying it was his first moment back in time.

“When you watch your life as an outsider, it really affects you,” Rizzotto explained in the video.

‘You get an insight into who you are that you simply can’t get otherwise. I learned a lot about myself just by watching, and the whole project made me realize that I’m often very hard and mean to myself as a human being. The guy I was watching was just… doing his best.
